How many people do you know that would insist on a backpacking trip one week before their planned memorial service? I know one, in fact I have been living with her for over 40 years. We started our relationship backpacking and she wanted to renew that as a bucket list item before it was too late. I had been discouraging the idea because she is in a weakened state and has a steel rod in her femur so it won’t break . Also, I normally do not go out in weather and NOAA was predicting 90% chance of rain/snow. But how could I say no to a request like that! Our plan was to hike the White River to Indian creek.

The trail is good but after about a 1.5 miles and pushing through brush, some down fall, and crossing a wash-out and debris flow she started having hip pain and doubts about the trip back in wet weather. So we turned around and found a camp site by the river. Just then it started to rain for the next 12 hours.

Because of the weather report I took a tent and my hammock tarp. The idea was to set the tarp up over the tent. That way we could at least break camp under a shelter. The tent site didn’t exactly line up with the tarp trees, but did offer coverage.

Her doctors say she is on a limited timeline. After this trip I have the feeling I will be doing it again in the future. If not multiple times. She is a trooper.

Not everyone finds a good partner to go through life with but it sounds like you two were a good fit. Best wishes.

Thanks for all the heartfelt kind words! Normally I would consider spending 12 hours hunkered down in a pouring rain storm a minor success. But my wife can't stop talking about the experience. She was just gushing about the trip to our son on the phone today. Now I feel guilty for not relenting and taking her out sooner. In any case, I am glad it made her happy and boosted her spirits. Also, ....what a great community NWhikers can be. up.gif

Most definitely. I wish the weather could have been better for you two. All the best. ~z Edit: Just saw your new comment above as I was posting. So I am adding this.

How could it not be? Though the weather, terrain and personal discomfort were challenging, just being together in a remote location away from all the hubbub and having each other to share time with would be such a healing and positive thing--especially since such trips have been an integral part of your relationship over the years. I admire her spirit. up.gif Thanks for sharing your story with us. ~z
