The border patrol has broad authority within 100 miles of the border or a port. Cascade River road is the next road south of HWY-20 with a trail connection to the Canadian Border, smuggler could conceivably schelp past HWY-20 using the PCT or Eastbank trail on the assumption that the first HWY south of the border is being closely monitored. Whether this actually is wise use of tax dollars is another issue. For example I was riding the Staten Island Ferry on Saturday and the ferry was flanked by a Coast Guard Patrol boat with a sailor at station on a tripod mounted machine gun. Before boarding the ferry I noted a sign that read "Current Security Level: MARSEC 1" the lowest level of alert.

I’ve seen them cruise alongside the Coho. They turn S about the international border. We actually made it into the Inner Harbour. I assume the goal is providing an illusion of safety resulting from their presence.

Keep Calm and Carry On? Heck No. Stay Excited and Get Outside!

Maybe the BP wanted to get in one last good end-of-season hike.

They do get out and hike as well as ride horses. I ran into one in some remote area near the Pasayten this summer. First time I ever bagged a peak with a border patrol agent. biggrin.gif

Ran into a BP Agent at Harts Pass, he even gave a ride to Mazama for some PCT hikers that touched the border and returned back to Harts Pass for the finish.
