Key takeaway: if someone claims to be the victim of a severe knife attack, ask (tactfully) to see the scars...

Meet a guy on the internet, almost immediately give him hundreds of dollars, then your car and bank card. Sorry, but there is no protection in this world for gullible suckers. I hope the perp ends up in jail, and as for Melissa, I wish her better luck next time. She was a pathetically easy mark.

Blame the female victim, eh? Lots of that going around.

While calling out the victim as being an easy target, not sure Slug was playing the gender card and emphasizing that the victim being female had something to do with it. He used her name, and said "she", which was accurate. Some people prefer to approach life trusting others until proven wrong. Akin to "innocent until proven guilty". I'd hate for us to live in a world of fear and distrust. But this day and age, especially with internet social connection, it seems like "trust but verify" might be a good rule by which to live.

Did you not see the "pathetically" qualifier and the dismissive "sorry" (which is pregnant with the implication that it was her fault)? He used more words blaming the victim than he did condemning the thief.

Within reason the trust approach incentivises good behavior and provides the service of exposing crooks. Kind of like controlled burns maybe.

Don't disagree there was victim blaming. I just didn't read it as playing the gender ("female victim") card. But when I reread your post, I don't think that was something you suggested.

Male or female, as an adult you are responsible for your actions. They were both at fault.

Whoa...let's be a little more specific here, and less accusatory towards the victims. You make this statement as if the victim and con man are of the same ilk. So, specifically the con man was at fault and guilty of fraud, deceit, and most likely theft. He also appears to be a sociopath at best. The worst the victims were guilty of was being naive and gullible...hardly the same, and certainly not a crime or tort.

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

Some people just need killing!

Alas, this is the era of false equivalencies and blame the victim.
