Is it permitted to set up trail cameras in a national park? I came across one deep in the woods. Could a private citizen set up such a camera legally? I would guess no, but perhaps someone might know the rule that applied.
A different, but related question. What activities are permitted that the average person might think are verbotten?

Olympic NP & NF have a network of off-trail cameras to monitor wildlife, scent-baited to attract and count fishers and marten. Link to report.
Olympic NF has a few on-trail cameras to count visitation.

Not for longer than 24 hours without a permit.
National Parks: 36 CFR §2.2(a) "Property: The following are prohibited... (2) Leaving property unattended for longer than 24 hours..."
National Forests: 36 CFR §261.10(e) "The following are prohibited... (e) Abandoning any personal property." (It may be arguable whether a camera, geocache or cached gear is "abandoned", but many NFs also have more specific regs on this, esp. within wilderness.)
