Chinook and Cayuse temporarily closed due to spinouts and avy danger. To be re-evaluated on Monday. North Cascades closed "temporarily" as well on 11/2.

Chinook/Cayuse too dangerous for crews so the evaluation is moved to tomorrow 11/7. North Cascades still closed, no new information.

WSDOT is doing their usual routine on I90 again this year. Despite totally adequate snow forecasts, FIRST they wait for the spinouts and collisions to occur. THEN they close the freeway to clear out the wrecks. Once the road is reopened, FINALLY they require chains. Whoever makes those decisions must have studied the close-the-barn-door-after-the-horse-escapes philosophy of highway management.

Pass closures due to collisions is WSP, not WSDOT. Calling for chains is WSP as well.

Chinook only. North Cascades back open. Would have been fun driving it. Love driving in fresh powder and will do it on Snoqualmie given the opportunity.

Conflicting info on the WSDOT website, but at least one location reports both Chinook and Cayuse Passes as closed for the season. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/passes/chinook-cayuse Mount Rainier is reporting both closed for the season as well. https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/road-status.htm

Thank goodness Chinook is closed. It's nice being the only one in a drainage this time of year.

Have I offended you today?

Sent them a message. Used to work there so it bugs me they can't do some things.

OK, I humbly stand corrected. WSP not WSDOT. The former are the same folks that require AWD vehicles to carry chains, while the owner's manuals state not to use chains (my Suby anyway).

I don't think they really care about that, if you get stuck and your vehicle is incapable of using chains and it's the only way to move, then your vehicle isn't qualified to be there (which is very rare, but it can happen... no vehicle can effectively drive up a featureless smooth sheet of water ice on a hill without chains, unless temperatures are VERY cold, far below WA temps). As far as I know, you can be ticketed for becoming stuck on the roadway of a mountain pass if you can't deal with your situation. So I suppose driving a vehicle that can't use chains is just a risk we're willing to take because it's very rare that they're required on AWD vehicles (I saw it one time last year, and I don't think I've ever personally seen it on the website any other year).

Ah, but I have this critical piece of gear between my ears that lets me know if the weather is or predicted to be soooo bad that I'd need chains in my Subaru, I need to stay home or wherever I'm at until things improve. I personally don't want to be driving in such conditions. In any case, I do have supposedly low-clearance chains that fit my wheels and stay in the car all winter long.
