Very sad. It is a popular hike for obvious reasons. Be careful out there. Rumi

Wondering just how they figured this out if he was alone.

"The man’s hiking partner, a male estimated to be similar in age, witnessed the fall and reported it around 2:45 p.m. Friday, Wagner said. The two men reportedly took different routes while hiking down the mountain. Near the summit, the partner descended by a rope system along an area of the Storm King Trail the park does not maintain, Wagner said. The other man traveled down rocky terrain before slipping on a rock that came loose, falling approximately 20-to-30 feet and tumbling down another 100 or so more feet upon landing, Wagner said."

witnessed the fall
Had read it but missed that. Figured if they are separate routes they were not able to see each other.

RIP to the deceased and condolences to the witnessing partner. However, I hope nothing is closed or blocked at the top of Storm King.

Standing on that crowded knife edge summit ridge is by far, the most nervous / uncomfortable I have ever been. Ever! Actually didn't do a lot of standing. Mostly sitting. Just a tiny unintentional bump from somebody else, throwing another off balance, there isn't much level and flat footing to regain, before heading over the cliffs. I looked like a fool, telling my two grown daughter's and wife to..."Sit Down!!!" I was relieved when we started heading down. Lots of unforgiving exposure

Experience is what'cha get, when you get what'cha don't want

Thanks to the SAR and helicopter crews. Mountain rescue aviation in iffy weather must require skill, courage, and heart.
