That misbehaving transmission sounds like a safety issue which needs a recall. I wonder if there are similar issues with the 2016 - 2017 models.

Glad I went out of my way to get a 2013 Forester... the last forester year without a CVT. No way was I going to buy a new technology on year 1(this was a few years ago). Even from a company with a good reputation that is asking for trouble...

I got two of those letters. One for our 2014 Impreza (my daughters car), the other for my 2015 Outback limited. I have 64k miles on the 2015. No transmission issues yet (knock on wood).
I do have the 6 banger so dunno if that makes a difference. I got suckered into the 100k extended warranty so I guess I'm good till then regardless.

I've got a friend in Sweden who drives a Subaru boxer diesel Outback. He gets over 50 mpg with it. When I talked with the Subaru North America representative about that engine she told me that they wont bring it to the US because they don't have an auto transmission strong enough to handle all that torque, and that Americans wont buy manual transmission vehicles!
REALLY? Americans wont buy a Subaru Outback that gets over 50 MPG? Total BS IMO.

bpj, you missed the point. Americans won't buy MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. As if you needed another proof what morons they are (sorry, I'm permanently jaundiced after last November). And how lazy. As well, they regard cheap gas as a basic human right - so who needs a car that gets 50mpg.
You can't even get an Outback with a manual transmission any more. It was still an option on a Forester as of 2017. Don't know about 2018.
Europeans have a lot of very high mileage diesel options available to them. Ya think the price of their gas may have something to do with that?
We once drove from Seattle to Revelstoke and back in a diesel car. Finally, stopped - once - for gas in Mt. Vernon on the way back.

I've only ever had vehicles with manual transmissions. My 2004 Forester is manual and I think it's one of the few models they offer with it now.

I don't get why so many hikers out on the MLH are always in such a freakin' hurry to get to and from the TH? I thought hiking and taking drives in the country were supposed to be leisurely and relaxing? Annoying.

Certainly, gasoline is more like $6-9 gallon in Europe, mostly taxes of course.
I rented a station wagon in Spain, it had a 6 speed manual, but also an auto shutdown/restart mechanism. Stop at a stoplight, clutch depressed, engine turns off automatically. Press gas pedal a bit to go, engine restarts automatically and instantly. Mileage was in the high 30s / low 40s. It wasn't gutless either.
The VW diesel emissions debacle is interesting-- as US EPA emissions standards seem to be set to just exclude a whole category of small displacement high efficiency diesel engines popular in Europe, while allowing less efficient larger diesel engines used in trucks / commercial vehicles. So I wonder if this diesel emissions standards are more about sustaining US oil consumption/us car makers than about protecting the health of us residents.
Of course in Europe a car is more of luxury than an essential than it is here in the USA , particularly the western states. It is much more practical to live carless in Europe.

I am currently in the US and I have a rental car (European sedan). It's an automatic and does the same thing (the engine turns off when I come to a complete stop for more than a few seconds).

The rental BMWs in the ReachNow carshare fleet do the same thing. It was a bit unnerving the first time I drove one and it shut down at a stoplight. Fired right back up quickly when I touched the gas though.

I made over 70 trips to Europe the last 25 years. Every time I was walking around Id look into cars and trucks (yes there are some) and I've NEVER seen an automatic transmission in an automobile. Ever! Sigh, there are some things the Europeans do better than us. Sadly.

Uh, yeah, not some things, most things, at least those things having to do with quality of life. Why sadly? We are a democracy, just like they are. WE are responsible for our own s**t.

My CrosTrek needs a 30K service. Anybody ever taken their Subaru to this place? It's on Bothell Way.
