Reposting this blog about wild fire resources, particularly those fires resulting in deployment and subsequent fatalities; I had posted it the other day but removed the post and revamped the blog. I saw the movie, Only the Brave, last week, and enjoyed it. No Hollywood bullsh##. Having read a book on the Yarnell Hill fire and the official incident report beforehand, I found the movie quite accurate as did others. But I'm not an expert. The theater in Concrete (where I saw the movie) invited some Baker River Hotshots, who gave us a short Q&A session. That was cool. Included in the blog are links to lots of resources to learn more about wild fires in general and book recommendations (that a lot of you have already read, I'm sure). NWHiker, Pyrites, was kind enough to provide me with the South Canyon Fire incident report, which I did not have earlier, so that is included as well.

John Maclean's books are all really good and definitely worth a read.

Yes they are! From his books you get citations, terms, and phrases that lead to even more research. I just realized I left inciweb off my blog. frown.gif

Hotshot crews like to put together videos of their past season, then videos get judged. Remember watching several including the Baker River crew's. As I recalled I liked theirs the best. One reason was the closing scene or shot. What every fire fighter dreams of during a hot dry summer. The last scene as I recall was rain on the windshield.

I will not see the movie. I have no desire to see deaths portrayed. Let's just say that some of the actual deaths of past fires, and close calls, have hit close to home, and affected friends for the rest of their lives. Reality is not a movie.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

It's more of a tribute and was done with respect and consultation with the families. The hotshot alum that were there said they said the movie was done in good taste. That's why I indicated it is not full of Hollywood hype. It's also highlighted the importance of keeping a clear space around your property in dry areas. I thnk it gives people something to think about. not only to honor the fire fighters, but to learn more. The Q&A session was really nice; people asking the Hotshots questions, learning about fires and what their local agencies do to help out. I was nice to see their names, their pictures and learn a bit about them, rather than no one ever knowing anything about them and how much their hard work mattered. Anyway, that's how I see it .

I know how you feel; a good friend of mine lost their life in an avalanche a few years ago and it has sickened me watching another skier publicize their role in the aftermath. Disgusting. Glad to hear Hollywood has done a good job with Only the Brave and the fire crews are receptive.
