Friday September 08, 2017 13:11 PDT (corrected 13:26 PDT) Olympic National Park News Release Lake Crescent Highway 101 to Close Beginning Monday for Public Safety Until Completion of Rock Scaling Work PORT ANGELES, WA: Due to traffic safety concerns through the rock scaling zone the Federal Highway Administration has recommended a full closure for Highway 101 until the rock scaling is completed. The full closure is scheduled to begin Monday at 6:00 am and anticipated to last for up to four days. No further rock scaling activity will occur until the full closure on Monday. During the first planned four-hour delay for rock scaling work on Thursday, September 7 the slope was prepared to allow traffic through the area over the weekend with temporary traffic signals for alternating single-lane traffic. During the closure, Highway 101 eastbound from Forks will remain open up to the turn for Barnes Point where Lake Crescent Lodge, Storm King Information Station, NatureBridge, and the trailheads are located. Highway 101 westbound from Port Angeles will remain open up to mile marker 232/East Beach Road. Travelers to the western side of the peninsula can use SR 112 as an alternate route during the closure. “Public and worker safety is of utmost importance,” said Olympic National Park Acting Superintendent Lee Taylor. “As much as we regret the inconvenience, the closure of Highway 101 at Lake Crescent is necessary until the rock scaling work is complete.” Olympic National Park officials and project partners at the Federal Highway Administration made the decision to close Highway 101 in the rock scaling zone to all traffic for public safety. The full closure, including after work hours, will expedite the completion of rock scaling work and ensure the safety of the public until the scaling is complete. With additional crew and a waiver from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to increase work hours for rock scaling, the contractor expects to complete the scaling in four days or less. Construction work will continue during the closure on other portions of the project outside the rock scaling area and travelers on Highway 101 at Lake Crescent should continue to expect half-hour delays Monday through Friday during work hours. Weekday work hours through September 23 are restricted to two hours after sunrise to two hours before sunset for areas outside the rock scaling zone. Traveling in the morning before 8:30 am and after 5:45 pm may help travelers avoid the half-hour delays. Maps of the area and access information are available on the park website at www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/lake-crescent-highway-101-rehabilitation-2017-19.htm. East Beach Road Paving operations on East Beach Road are underway. September 8: Paving patches on East Beach Road, expect half-hour delays throughout the work day from 8:40 am to 5:40 pm. September 11-15: Paving bottom lift on East Beach Road (left half/right half), expect half-hour delays throughout the work day from 8:45 am to 5:30 pm. September 18-20: Top lift paving, full road width. 10-hour closures with no through traffic; local resident access only. Areas to be paved each day are to be announced. Log Cabin Resort will remain open and signage will direct traffic to Log Cabin Resort via SR 112 to Joyce-Piedmont Road or from East Beach Road depending on the location of paving operations. www.nps.gov

Wednesday September 13, 2017 16:55 PDT Olympic National Park News Release Update: Crews Working To Complete Rock Scaling and Reopen Lake Crescent Highway 101 May Require Until Friday PORT ANGELES, WA: The full closure of Highway 101 at Lake Crescent since Monday has allowed rock scaling work to progress safely and efficiently. The full closure was anticipated to last up to four days, however, despite aggressive efforts to complete the work in the initial timeframe the work may require an additional day. After evaluating the scaling left to complete at this point and the time necessary to clear the road and replace the concrete barriers, reopening the road may need to wait until Friday. Crews are continuing to work hard to meet the original schedule of reopening Thursday evening. However, the park is making this notification in order to keep the public informed of progress and to plan ahead. “We recognize the importance of the Highway 101 corridor to the public and the inconvenience that the closure has caused,” said Olympic National Park Acting Superintendent Lee Taylor. “The safety of the public has to take precedence.” Highway 101 will reopen as soon as possible, but travelers should plan ahead for the potential that the closure may last until Friday at 6:00 pm. Rock scaling is expected to be completed Thursday evening or Friday morning. Once the rock scaling is finished, the road will be cleared of debris and the concrete barriers will be reinstalled through the work zone. Once the barriers are in place, Highway 101 will reopen to single-lane traffic through that area. Temporary traffic signals for alternating single-lane traffic will be in place for the reopening with short delays through the weekend and after hours. Starting Monday, flaggers will control traffic during work hours for the installation of rock bolts and dowels. This work will require half-hour delays. No four-hour closures are currently scheduled in the next two weeks. Due to traffic safety concerns through the rock scaling zone the Federal Highway Administration recommended a full closure for Highway 101 until the rock scaling is completed. Wednesday October 18, 2017 16:48 PDT Olympic National Park News Release Four-hour Delays To Begin October 30 on Lake Crescent Highway 101 Until Rock Bolting is Complete PORT ANGELES, WA: Lake Crescent Highway 101 will have 4-hour delays beginning Monday, October 30. These delays will occur Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and are anticipated to continue until the project shuts down for the winter in late November. The 4-hour delays will reduce risk to the public and increase productivity by allowing work to occur without traffic present. The 4-hour delays will also allow work to occur in the higher risk zones. “I appreciate the great inconvenience of 4-hour delays to travelers,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum. “However, public safety must come first.” Additional safety measures are now in effect after two recent instances of property damage during rock bolting operations, one involving a failed drill rig anchor bolt. No drilling or repositioning of drilling rigs will take place during periods of traffic movement. The park’s partner for this project, Western Federal Lands Highway Division, has “a high level of confidence that these new safety procedures will provide for safe public travel through the work zone.” Rock scaling work was completed during the complete Highway 101 closure September 11-15. The current phase of work on the rockface is referred to as rock bolting. Holes are drilled from five to twenty-five feet into the rock to secure weathered, less stable rock near the surface to structurally sound rock deeper within. Surface rock is then secured to stable rock under tension with surface plate washers and epoxy inside the drilled holes. When complete, this work will significantly mitigate the rockfall hazard in this area. During the delays, travelers to and from the western side of the peninsula can use SR 112/113 as an alternate route. Highway 101 eastbound from Forks will remain open up to the turn for Barnes Point where Lake Crescent Lodge, Storm King Information Station, NatureBridge, and the trailheads are located. Highway 101 westbound from Port Angeles will be open up to mile marker 232/East Beach Road. The Washington State Department of Transportation will be working during the delay between East Beach Road and the rock bolting zone to complete necessary maintenance. Access for emergency vehicles through the closed area will be coordinated using established communication procedures with the traffic control supervisor. Construction work will continue during the 4-hour delays on other portions of the project outside the rock bolting area and travelers on Highway 101 at Lake Crescent should continue to expect half-hour delays Monday through Friday during work hours. Traveling in the morning before 7:00 am and after 7:00 pm may help travelers avoid the half-hour delays. Maps of the area and current project information are available on the park website at http://go.nps.gov/LCHwy101Project. www.nps.gov

Friday October 20, 2017 14:22 PDT This message is to notify you of updated information regarding the Darrington Storm Damage Repairs Project. Darrington Road Repair Projects Heavy rains during the 2016 winter damaged numerous roads and trails across the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, including several roads within the Darrington Ranger District. The Forest is working to restore access for Forest users by repairing roads that have experienced storm-related damage while also maintaining aquatic and wildlife habitat standards. Proposed actions include the repair or replacement of damaged or plugged culvert pipes, construction of mechanically stabilized earth retaining wall, and excavation and placement of roadway surface and embankment material. The projects are located on NFS lands in Snohomish County, Washington, see Table 1 and Figure 1 in the notification letter for specific project locations. The proposed repairs have been included in the “Emergency Repair of Federally Owned Roads” program, or ERFO, administered by the Federal Highways Administration (FHA). The FHA is the lead Federal agency for repair efforts and the Forest is working with FHA to design the repairs for these damaged roads. Planning and design work is underway and repair work is proposed to start in summer 2018. View the complete notification letter from Ranger Forbes, including a map and summaries of the proposed repairs here. For additional information about the proposed repairs, please visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=49024 Thank you for your interest in the management of Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. -Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest-

However, all vehicles must be below the Glines Canyon Overlook area by 6:00 am on Monday, October 30 prior to the four-day closure. Permits are required for overnight camping in the Boulder Creek Camp area. Campfires are prohibited at the camp area and the hot springs due to extensive damage by visitors and subsequent revegetation efforts. Pets and bicycles are not permitted beyond the trailhead. For more information about backpacking and wilderness permits visit www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/wilderness-permits.htm or call the Wilderness Information Center at 360-565-3100. For current road and travel information, visitors should consult the park website at www.nps.gov/olym or call the recorded Road and Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131. --NPS--

Thursday November 16, 2017 11:07 PST Olympic National Park News Release Lake Crescent Highway 101 to Close This Friday, November 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For Paving PORT ANGELES, WA: Highway 101 will be closed at the rock scaling zone on Friday, November 17 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm for paving. Paving through the rock scaling zone is necessary due to major potholes created in the road from falling rocks. The road damage is slowing traffic to the point that very few cars are able to get through the timed traffic light during non-work hours resulting in fewer cars making it through in between timed delays. Olympic National Park officials and project partners at the Federal Highway Administration made the decision to close Highway 101 in the rock scaling zone to all traffic in order to mitigate future traffic delays. Highway 101 eastbound from Forks will remain open up to the turn for Barnes Point where Lake Crescent Lodge, Storm King Information Station, NatureBridge, and the trailheads are located. Highway 101 westbound from Port Angeles will remain open up to mile marker 223/East Beach Road. Travelers to the western side of the peninsula can use SR 112 as an alternate route during the closure. Construction work will continue during the closure on other portions of the project outside the rock scaling area and travelers on Highway 101 at Lake Crescent should continue to expect half-hour delays Monday through Friday during work hours. Maps of the area and access information are available on the park website at www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/lake-crescent-highway-101-rehabilitation-2017-19.htm. -NPS-

Tuesday November 21, 2017 15:21 PST Olympic National Park News Release Lake Crescent Highway 101 Thanksgiving Update and Winter Shutdown Information PORT ANGELES, WA: Travelers around Lake Crescent will not encounter any road work for the rest of this week as crews return home for Thanksgiving. Drivers should expect short delays for the traffic signals at the rock wall area around mile post 229 for alternating single-lane traffic. Road work delays will resume Monday, November 27. The scheduled 4-hour delays occur daily Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and will continue into December until the rock bolting work is completed. These 4-hour delays are anticipated through December 7. Outside of the scheduled 4-hour delays drivers should continue to expect up to half-hour delays during weekday work hours until rock bolting work is completed and the project shuts down for the winter. Traveling in the morning before 7:00 am and after 7:00 pm may help travelers avoid the half-hour delays. The rest of the road work on Highway 101 at Lake Crescent is finished for the 2017 season with the exception of some clean up and installation of pavement markings around Fairholme Hill for additional safety over the winter period. The current traffic lane in the rock wall area was paved last Friday to repair road damage. The closed traffic lane will be paved prior to the winter shutdown and that section will reopen to two lanes. There will be no traffic signals during the winter, however, the lanes will be narrower than usual in the rock wall section with a reduced speed limit in that area. Drivers can find updates and maps of the project area with current project information on the park website at http://go.nps.gov/LCHwy101Project. www.nps.gov

Mountain Loop A creekbed disgorged its contents onto the road near Bedal. Rocks, mud, debris. From MBSNF website today: "The gravel section between Barlow pass and Darrington has several debris flow washouts with water flowing on the road. Not passable to most vehicles. These happened over night. Heavy rain remains in the forecast for the next several days. Be prepared for winter conditions including windfall trees, high water, snow and icy road surfaces. All gates are open as of Nov. 22. No cell service for most of the drive."

Thursday November 30, 2017 13:52 PST Olympic National Park News Release Olympic Hot Springs Road in the Elwha Valley Remains Closed Due to Flood Damage Last week’s storm activity, coupled with increased runoff from warm temperatures and melting snow, resulted in flooding and significant road damage that closed the Elwha Valley’s Olympic Hot Springs Road. The road remains closed to vehicle traffic beyond the Madison Falls parking area. The increasing flows, which peaked at over 18,000 cfs, caused a change in the river pattern sending substantial flow towards the road. This resulted in a breach of the road’s low water crossing and additional damage to the road at the parking area near the former Elwha campground. The river continues to flow across the road. Park staff will be able to assess the full extent of the damage when the river goes down. Over the last two years the park has worked to maintain access into the Elwha Valley through road repairs and a temporary bridge. In addition, the park started the planning process for the future of the Olympic Hot Springs Road to address long-term, sustainable access. Part of this process includes analyzing various options such as modifying the current roadway or relocating it to an area outside the floodplain. The planning process will yield alternatives, one of which will be implemented in 2020-2021. The storm event last week also resulted in additional road closures across the park. The Upper Hoh Road was damaged by the Hoh River resulting in a washout at milepost 8 outside the park. Jefferson County public works department is currently in the process of organizing repairs. All park facilities in the Hoh Rain Forest are closed. A landslide on the Staircase Road also resulted in a closure just outside the park boundary at the Bear Gulch Picnic Area. For current road and travel information, visitors should consult the park website at www.nps.gov/olym or call the recorded Road and Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131. --NPS--
