Heard a brief report that some caribou herds in Alberta are having a hard time. Their theory is that oil exploration roads have made it easier for wolves to move around and the wolves are killing more caribou. Sounds like the Canadian gubmint is going to try to get the oil people to restore the area. I think. I didn't hear all of that.
What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human末animals and aliens are great possibilities

A moose was killed illegally somewhere in the Lake Wenatchee vicinity. Don't think there are any caribou around there.

I barely know anything about woodland caribou. But supposedly there are some on the 49th, near Idaho. There are fewer of them than the number of people that will be at the NWH potluck.

You can volunteer to collect lichen if you want. Looks like they have a plan.

Is there any logging at all going on in the region.
A couple decades ago a pair of women in the Willamette put out a dye your wool using lichens book. It had plastic baggies of lichen samples in each book.
The authors included Thank You痴 to a couple log sort yards that let them collect the volume of samples they needed. Not all the lichen was knocked of by yarding.
Best.

There wouldn't be any logging at that elevation.
It is well known amongst the people who work in the woods, that deer will move in at night and munch the lichen off the cut trees. There will be stories of some hanging around during the day and always a story of getting a buck with a tree. The latter cannot be verified and may be a rural legend.
Around the Bonaparte area (east of Tonasket), during a very cold and windy spell, deer were also bedding down next to the equipment at night while it was still warm, and crawling into the slash piles on the landings for warmth. They are opportunists and are not scared out of the country by the noise of the operations as some believe. In fact, it is said that the deer come calling when they hear the noise of logging equipment.
I don't know much about caribou, but I suspect they do not head down low enough to benefit.
