Just drove up 73 to Huckleberry creek last Sunday. Nice snowy hike, never needed our snow shoes. I might try going the few miles further up to the "back" entrance to Grand Park on Sunday 11/26. Hard to tell how the road will be with all the snow and rain that will fall between now and then. Just posting this in hopes someone will venture up before me and touch base on this thread? One can hope up.gif

So the gate was still open past huckleberry creek trailhead? Was it snowy? Where exactly did you hike? The backdoor trailhed parking is around 4600 feet. Surprised the gate would still be open. If not it’s a 4 mile road walk to back door trailhead. My favorite place in the park but I just assumed inaccessible by now....

We did the Huckleberry creek trail. I didn't actually see the gate but based on the traffic that obviously kept on moving uphill it was open (at least last weekend) very light snow and ice to the trailhead.

I went to Grand Park via Lake Eleanor over Thanksgiving two years ago and the gate was open. I didn't hit snow on the road until about halfway up from Huckleberry Creek to the Eleanor trailhead but by the time I made it I was pushing snow with the bumper of my Outback in the parking area on the road shoulder. Larger pickups had plowed through on the road before me. Driving up was easy but going back down later in the day was kind of dicey. That road has a few steep places where you don't want to slide.

One thing to keep in mind is that two years ago was a light snow year. This year the snow came earlier. Then again, this current " heat spell", rain, and warm wind just might melt much of the early snow.

Passing rocks and trees like they were standing still

Some guys from a "overlanding" forum are going out Saturday and driving from 75 Haller Pass to 73. I am hoping they report back Saturday evening. I should have no issues with a foot maybe foot and a half but much more (all dependent on condition of snow) I'll go back.
