Hex Mountain is snowshoeable
Although, currently, not completely necessary
Fun to lay tracks in some virgin snow
Pretty day
Really get a perspective on how large the Jolly Mountain fire was

Did you start from the road off Salmon la Sac highway north of Newport Creek?
Last time I drove past there it appeared that someone had purchased that land and put up a private land sign. Last year the road was plowed during the winter for some area logging work. Is the gate barred? Snow down to the highway at this point?

Yes, started on that road. It is still gated. All the signs posted last year are gone. A "For Sale" sign for the property is the only sign posted. There were no "no trespassing" or "private property" signs posted. I remember the sign last year said, "Area open to non motorized use only. Snowmobiles prohibited"
The road is snow covered at the get-go. Like I said, if your itching to get the snowshoes on, there is enough on the ground to justify it, but not necessary. You can boot it all the way to the summit.
Super windy on the ridge and there was nothing consistent about the snow depth. From wind scoured bare ground in some areas, to 3 foot deep wind drifts in other areas.
