When my cousin Helen came to visit from Skarmunken, she wanted to go see some "big rainforest trees".
She wasn't here long enough for us to drag her out to the coast to see the giants on the west side of the Peninsula, so we took her up to the Carbon and walked in a mile or so and went out onto a gravel bar and had lunch. She loved it!

The old Railroad grade between Carbonado all the way out to the old Manley Moore site is an excellent walk. Also, the town site of Melmont. Across the river you can find the site of Fairfax. Look for the old swimming pool.
Up from the Carbon entrance you will find the start of the Boundary Trail. If you've a mind you could always try and locate Cliff House.

Whatever you do,... don't leave any valuables in your car/truck if you plan on parking anywhere near the entrance... probably best to just leave your rig un-locked... this way you won't have to purchase a new window....

From the Carbon entrance take the good Boundary Trail up to Alki Crest then follow the decent bootpath up to Florence Peak (it's false summit). Big view of Mt. Rainier from Florence .

Celery Meadows is a nice secluded hike(maybe unreachable now) just outside Wilkeson.
Also Clipper Mine is a fun, really short hike. Surprise lake, Read up on Clearwater Wilderness.
I love the area even with its bad rep.

Make friends with williswall, he seems to be trapped inside MRNP. He probably knows every inch of it.

That's right, I forgot about that! Is Sarbar still around? I'm pretty sure she lives out this way too....

Sarbar is still around and lives in the south end, tho I'm not sure how often she visits this site - if you're on the FB group, you'll find her there more often. Or you can find her through her websites.
Out Hwy 410, I really like Federation Forest SP. Unfortunately, they've had bad budget cuts, and the park isn't very well maintained. But if you feel like crawling around giant trees, it's a nice quiet place to go. Check the website, I believe they close in the winter, at least during the week.
There's also a nice easy hike down that way called Snoquera Falls. The trail runs right along the river. The falls are kind of iffy, but I've never seen so many Calypso orchids in my life as in that forest.
Stop in at Wapiti Woolies for coffee and supplies.

Thanks for all the ideas guys!
Sluggy, my fave part about spray park is the solitude.
In January , we will check out the road walk, because we can hop up there after I get home from work.
