Last year raising3hikers posted a fun topic, so here it is again. How many miles, new peaks, trips, nights of camping, elevation gain, did you do? How many pairs of boots or trail runners did you destroy? How many volcanoes did you climb? How many bears did you see, etc. Here's mine: bears: 1 bighorn sheep: 10+ miles: ? elevation gain: (will fill this in later) ascents: 333 new peaks: 314 volcanoes: 22 repeats: 15 failed attempts: 4

It's not over yet! But so far: - 72 hikes (including 8 overnight, and one with some paddling) - just over 400 miles distance, with almost 70K ft gain (lots of short trips this year...) - 1 photo per mile, on average - 20 summits (including 2 repeats)

At my advanced age, every hike is a sort of blessing, getting out on the trails with my best friends, usually three days a week (weather-permitting), and trying to get up the walls at Vertical World in Seattle another three days a week, with a younger group of friends--my weekly schedule since I retired, nine years ago, at age 65. Today was my 112th hike this year, for a total of 634 miles, with 169,480 feet of elevation gain, plus--after tomorrow--116 climbing days, up to several 5.11a routes (later downgraded to 5.10c after Vertical World staff saw that I got up those routes). Every year, I seem to do fewer hikes, fewer miles, less vertical gain--but always with a great group of other senior citizens. Like me, some of them have had knee replacements though, so far, I'm the only one who has had an ankle replacement as well. I also take lots of photos on these hikes--and here are mine for this year: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nordique/albums/72157675226350024

up.gif Way to go! Keeps you (at least thinking you are) younger at heart, I'd say. "stats? Here goes: 1 night camping in the Black hills, SD with the two grandsons, the eldest saw a "rattlesnake" while fishing a small creek. Grandpa had to wade through underbrush and down a steep embankment wearing shorts and sandals to go see what it *really* was. It was gone, but the pic he shot seemed to indicate a small bullsnake. 3 jumps off a 30' high rock into Horsethief Lake (the kids, not me!), last one resulting in a "grandpa, my ear hurts"! Oh, good grief, now late in the afternoon we head back home. Drove all night, took him to the clinic, it was an ear infection, stirred up by an errant landing in the lake. 1/2 summit attempt on Mt Adams with eldest grandson. At ~ 10K, we decided it just wasn't fun anymore, and turned around. Going to do it for sure this coming summer, I'm sure! Zero miles (feet) hiked in snowshoes, not enough snow (had one snowfall in December, none worth consdering after that). 1 roadtrip to Corvallis to watch the eclipse. A real "thumbs-up", worth the 3-times-as-long-as-usual return home trip aggravations. 2 roadtrips to visit family "out west", summited Spencer Butte (~2000' elevation, I believe?) in Eugene. And that's my exciting report. wink.gif
