Story here. I wonder if this isn't more about appeasing the Sherpa businesses rather than safety concerns. Rumi

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I believe these new restrictions are for all mountains in Nepal. At least that is what I heard on NPR this morning.

Yes, I just checked that out. I also see they suggested the changes were designed to boost the guide businesses as I had noted above. Rumi

I appreciate the sentiment but fear that boat has already sailed.

I don't blame them. From the tales, Everest has gotten to be a real sh## show. The mountain is getting a bad reputation, and they needed to do something about it. These restrictions are reasonable given the popularity of the climb.

If you don't meet the qualifications or have an additional 100K to slide under the table to get around 'em, then too bad. Life isn't fair.

How is banning solo climbers, who are usually professionals that climb alpine style without Sherpa support, going to impact the guided climbing industry in any way?

It's BS...it's a shame that a mountain is turned into amusement park, if you have the desire and ability to climb a mountain, you should be free to do so and not have to pay unless you are paying for a guide service.

An almost perfect archetypal "1st world problem" Nepal is still crawling back from the 2015 earthquakes that killed over 9,000 and made 3.5 million people homeless and caused damages equal to 50% of GDP. That would be like the USA getting hit by a disaster than caused 9 trillion dollars worth of damage, killing 94,000 people and leaving 38 million people homeless.

To me, loss of freedoms is not a "first world problem"...but more like a snowball rolling down hill, starts out small...

Relevance? Banning solo climbers will alleviate the burdens of the Napalese people how?
