Made a quick trip up to Chair Peak Basin in the AM before having to do some mandatory holiday related activities. It was a very brisk morning with the temp at the TH hovering around 13 degrees.

Snow coverage was good although I'd like to see at least a few more feet on the ground.

Excellent skin track running along Alpental valley all the way to Source Lake and continuing to Snow Lake divide and Chair Peak Basin.

Thanks for the quick report. Helps to anticipate conditions on Tuesday.

By "Chair Peak Basin", after the Snow Lake divide (ridge), did you traverse paralleling Snow Lake, then turn up the (in the snow free-months) granite area, or go straight up the ridge towards Chair Peak from the SL divide? Nice TR!

This is the winter route to snow lake?  What's the avy threat level?  Safe on a moderate day, like tomorrow or save it for better conditions?

This is the safest route to Snow Lake in the winter. When I did this trip, the slope heading up to Snow Lake Divide, which is the main one I worry about, was so tracked out that I would put the avalanche danger at around zero. I don't know how much conditions have changed since then, however. I think it will be fine but you'll need to evaluate for yourself.

Commonwealth Basin is a very safe choice. Denny Creek Trail is another one that comes to mind.

Commonwealth is safe to a point, but farther up the basin there is a lot of avalanche potential terrain.  There have been several fatalities over the decades in the upper areas of the basin (beyond the big trees)
