That was my first impression when I viewed the aerial footage. Surely they had an impact--maybe similar to walking near a loaded snow pack and triggering a release but on a much larger scale. ~z

In the article they are careful not to mention that human activity had anything to do with this. The crack does continue right into the quarry though. It is interesting that the quarry owners have offered to pay for hotel rooms for evacuees if they choose to leave their homes below so they must see a connection. I know I would not be resting easy if I lived under that landmass. eek.gif

This is an interesting spot for a slide. The gap is a natural chokepoint and if 82 goes under and 97 is impacted as well there are no easy alternatives for rerouting other than a farm road a few miles east or the Sunnyside cutoff 20 miles or so east. None to the West. If the slide was really big and slid into the Yakima river, you could wind up with quite a flood situation if the water backed up instead of being pushed westward towards 97. The ridgeline and gap there are ideally situated to make a heck of a big lake where Yakima is.

Great video. And thanks for the map, Joey. Looking at the gap (actually, many of the gaps), it certainly appears as if the Yakima river predates any of the E-W trending ridges like Rattlesnake. But my understanding is that these E-W trending ridges (Rattlesnake, Saddle, Horse Haven, etc.) predate the orogenic uplift of the cascades. Which would mean the Yakima river predates the cascade range. Interesting! Maybe Brushbuffalo can chime in.

Does anyone know why nothing seems to grow on those hill sides?

Pretty sure people have something to do with it.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I can’t remember his name. Someone mentioned a CWSU geology professor that had a YouTube re: Missoula Floods. One of his others mentioned these side ridges, including river rocks that occur on top at some place. This was attributed to previous locations of the Yakima, prior to the ridges rising. Best.

Here's a quote from Bruce Bjornstad:
Quote:
Bjornstad added that if he were to travel past Union Gap on I-82, “I think I would find an alternate route.”
I think I would heed his advice.

From the video and map it appears the cracks run roughly north-south and are northwest of the quarry. The trailer park, however, is south of the quarry. My untrained speculation is any landslide would go west, at right angle to the cracks, and miss the trailer park. Looks like a low probability - high liability situation and motel rooms are cheaper than lawyers.

I saw on the news last night that all residents below the slide were given mandatory evacuation orders.
