I was having coffee and listening to Robin Trower "Bridge of Sighs" Saturday morning and my wife commented on the blue skies and sunshine outside. I thought nothing of it, must be transitory, and planned to go running when Steve called me with some ambition in his voice, he had an opportunity and wanted to get out. I thought that sounded good as an alternative, even though nothing was ready, we didn't know where we would go, and it was late, but you can always throw something together quick and get out for some exercise, views, and lunch.
So we met at the end of the pavement on Burch Mountain Rd. at an early 1200 hr., the gate was open which was surprising for this time of year and headed up the road on shallow snow, slush, ice, and mud. We thought about going over to Ohme Mountain, but opted to get some more elevation gain and miles in why were out and the sun was shining high above the approaching clouds from the West. We kept a good pace and settled on the first highpoint surrounded by rocks with a lone Ponderosa Pine in he center. We had lunch and coffee watching the clouds slowly overtake the mountains and move towards us from the West and headed back down.
Horselake Mountain
Enchantments were in and out of the clouds.

Go to shoes. Hokaa Speedhikers worked well in the snow, slush, ice, and mud.
Looking South towards Jumpoff, Mission, Lillian Ridge with Twin Peaks in the foreground.
About a 3 year old pack I get into the rotation, but light with plenty of storage on the front shoulder straps nice for dayhikes. At 30L I think I could overnight with it. Less weight on the back and feet part of my "graying" strategy.
I like how you guys manage to get out on impromptu hikes in spite of what else is going on in your lives. Sorry I missed this opportunity by just minutes! Looking forward to local flower hikes in a couple of months.
