It wasn't that great. I sat outside for two hours, from 10 pm to midnight, and saw some nice ones, but just a fraction of what I have seen from the Perseids. The mountain loop highway was dark enough, but the frozen road on the drive out was cause for cautious driving.

The media always blows these things out of proportion and raises expectations, which ticks me off. Take everything they say about astronomical events other than solar eclipses with a huge grain of salt. The Gem's are a reliable, better than average shower and this year the conditions were perfect, but most reporting implies you'll see the sky explode like the Millenium Falcon going into warp or something. Nope, just a streak every few minutes...at it's *peak*. Great if your expectations are correctly calibrated, a let down if you expect what they often imply.

A lifetime ambition was to view the Perseids from a dark-sky summit. So I found myself curled-up with the dog on top of Chikamin, when -- of all things -- a passerby shows up, and mentions the meteor shower. I had totally forgotten about it! Spaced it, so to speak.

Some people have better things to do with their lives than walking the dog. Some don't.
