I've preferred to cowboy camp when possible over the past 30 years and have lots of nights in bivy bags. Keep in mind that I don't purposefully plan on a bivy in foul weather, except a few times on above timberline ridges in blowing snow. I spent a few nights this past season in the EE Recon bivy, which features a large upper mesh area with a central zip, so not a weatherproof design. Review here, cheers.
