I presume you mean going down to Index Creek...? I've done the section from Lake Carter to Lake Edna, and I remember the trails being a bit faint. That section doesn't get too much traffic. However, I was able to stay on track and never went wrong. YMMV.
Here's my trip report with some photos of that part in the middle: Lake Ida – Carter Lake – Lake Edna loop

Appreciate the imput. The plan with the family would be to do a week starting up White Pine/Whitehorse creek over Ladies pass to Edna to Carter to Augusta and out. We did Chain lakes to Lake Mary onto Lake Florence and down the chiwaukum several years back and really liked it and was pouring over maps and came up with this possible trip....
I was curious as to recent trail conditions as many trails seem to be fading of late. Given the fire up the trail from the Hatchery Creek trailhead, I suspect fewer people have been up there as well, which often leads to brushy fading trails.
The area around Carter was brushy and sketchy in places last time I did it a decade ago. Even Carter lake was took some stomping around to find at that time. I would also be interested in an update.
Was in there last year, the trail was in pretty good shape around Carter. Enough people go in there to keep the trail pretty easy to follow. Trial down into Index(steady grind) has a few blow downs and up to Edna was decent with a little brush before you cross Edna creek.
