Cliff Mass has done a two-part blog on this phenomenon and claims he may reveal the answer today. However, today is half over and no part three yet!

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey

I’d be curious to hear how this comes out. That microburst that hit Lacey was dramatic. The neighbors two homes away whole roof truss system was flattened. Once repaired they sold and moved. Said it didn’t feel like home.

From Cliff Mass
Quote:
An approaching front produced just the right conditions to produce a high amplitude mountain wave on the upstream ridge, which resulted in a strong rotor that produced powerful reverse flow (northerlies). As in the research work cited above, a very energetic subrotor was probably produced, and that resulted in a localized area of intense winds as it rotated down to the ground.

Seems plausible that it was a mountain wave. Mountains are great at throwing you the most jacked up winds when you least expect it. There are all sorts of fun nonlinear modes that start popping up in fluid flow - on rare occasions very strong and very out of the ordinary - once you throw in big terrain. I had a mountain airport get 110mph gusts all of a sudden without any warning in a background flow of only 30-40mph. Fortunately it hit when my aircraft were not operating!

Anybody know if the winds here affected the Lake Quinault Nature trails or the main TH in the Quinault drainage?
