What's the difference between sendero and camino? Both seem to mean trail.

Camino also includes roads and other ways of travel sendero is a footpath. Either can be a trail, I believe.

Sendero is a little too elegant for "trail". It can be used to describe a spiritual or philosophical path, among other things. Camino implies a road. Brecha usually works for a hiking trail, although it may imply a path for beasts or off road vehicles. A brecha is a way through, often a rough haphazard path hacked and stomped through spine-covered vegetation, teeming with poisonous reptiles and vicious feral pig creatures.

Senda is a common word for trail. http://www.wordreference.com/definicion/senda El camino can also metaphorically signify "the way" as in the famous line by Machado, "caminante, no hay camino, se hace el camino al andar." http://gwenglish.blogspot.com/2014/04/poem-of-day-antonio-machados-caminante.html

I've seen 'sendero' used in Mexico to describe a hiking trail and 'senderismo' used as 'hiking'. Camino refers to this:

Depends a lot on where you are or what condition or whether describing the actual trail or in general terms. Picada or huella is sometimes used for physical trail. Also pista, rastro, Camino or sendero is used more in the sense of a route or way rather than the physical track. I've never heard sendero used any other way actually.

Gracias a todos! This is surprisingly complex. Richp, I like the Spanish version of the poem. The concept of hiking is also not completely straightforward. Seems to require in many cases two words: Me gusta praticar senderismo.
