That is a shame. I had breakfast there one morning a number of years back. It was a pretty neat place right next to a campground with outstanding views.

Heartbreaking! Century-Old Chalet Falls Victim to Glacier Park Wildfire - historic photos - Flathead Beacon It least it wasn't arson (Falls Shelter, Olympic NP) or Wilderness Watch (Green Mountain Lookout) or Daesh (Palmyra, Syria), although the outcome is the same. Enchanted Valley Chalet could be re-opened to provide the same experience within Olympic NP... if WilderWatch advocates don't succeed in convincing the Park to burn it down in it's "Long Term Disposition of EV Chalet" plan.

A really wonderful place. I was fortunate enough to stay there two nights in 2005 when I was Artist in Residence at Glacier and once again in 2007. There is already talk of rebuilding. If you want to learn more about the Glacier chalets of the past and present read A View with a Room. Here are a couple views of Sperry that I did.

Viewer discretion advised, as they say on TV, if you are going to view the photos of the aftermath of the Sperry Chalet fire. It's enough to make a person cry if they've visited what used to be this lovely place: Sperry Chalet fire photos Don't overlook the link to donate to the rebuilding of this historic site: Donate to the rebuilding of Sperry Chalet link.

Sperry Chalet, the Next 100 Years The National Park Service is beginning public scoping on the proposed restoration of the Sperry Chalet experience in Glacier National Park. An environmental assessment will be prepared. A scoping brochure is available online. Scoping is an opportunity to suggest alternatives. Four concepts are presented: - Restore the dormitory to as “close to as it was,” reflecting its period of significance (1914-1949). - Restore the dormitory “in place, but modernized” using as much of the historic fabric as possible. - Construct an entirely new structure, complementing the historic landscape, in a slightly different location to avoid recent avalanche activity. - Erect canvas wall tents or yurts, stabilize stone walls of the original structure as a ruin. Public scoping comments are due by April 2, 2018 and can be submitted on line.

Due to national interest, Park Superintendent Jeff Mow and Glacier National Park Conservancy held the public scoping meeting online via Facebook Live. See Glacier Park superintendent wants Sperry Chalet rebuilt starting this summer

Rebuild Sperry Chalet for the Next 100 Years Environmental Assessment "The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing to rebuild the Sperry Chalet Dormitory Building that was badly burned in the Sprague Fire in 2017. Specifically, the NPS is proposing to rebuild the Sperry Chalet Dormitory at its original site within the original walls. This EA analyzes three alternatives, (A-Rebuild Chalet, B-Build New Dormitory and Preserve Remaining Walls as a Ruin and C-No Action)." Comment period closes May 07, 2018. Comments may be submitted online. Glacier National Park can prepare and release an EA for Sperry Chalet in 7 months. Olympic NP can't do the same for Enchanted Valley Chalet in four years. It's clear what their decision will be - Actions speak louder than words. frown.gif

Decision to rebuild Sperry Chalet was signed May 10, eight months after the fire. NPS can make timely decisions when it wants to. Enchanted Valley Chalet: NPS concluded in 2005 the only way to ensure its safety is to move it immediately, but didn't until 2014, and then only then only approved a minor temporary move and has made no long-term decision in the past 4 years. Another winter, river will take it, decision moot. Olympic Hot Springs Road: US Army Corps of Engineers concluded in 1987 road would wash out at Elwha Campground if not protected, 1996 and 2005 EIS' decisions were to protect it, but NPS did not implement these plans, so in 2015 it washed out as predicted. 2-1/2 years later, studies started for new plan that might be written by 2020, and implemented in... ???

Let's say it's purely coincidental that Secretary Zinke hails from the State of Montana, home of Glacier NP, right? wink.gif It's worth noting that $256 Million is just a bit more than 2% of the $11.9 Billion dollar deferred maintenance backlog at the National Park Service.
