Finally kicking the flu after a week, I couldn’t wait to meet my SouthSound hiking partner in North Bend and head up the Mid-Fork to a trail I’ve never been on, the Taylor River Trail. We had set a goal of Otter Falls, about ten miles round trip, but had no idea what to expect in regards to snow depth, so we wore gaiters and waterproof boots and brought micro spikes. As the day progressed, we were glad we brought all three. The road was snow free all the way up to the Taylor River Bridge, and my Honda Civic had no trouble with the small amount of snow on the road after that. But after about a quarter mile past the trailhead, it was almost all snow the rest of the day. Most of the trail was in the shade, so we followed a nice firm boot path with very little postholing until we got past Marten Creek, where the snow became deeper. We crossed several scenic creeks, until we came to Otter Creek, which was a bit tricky due to several feet of snow partially covering it. We put on our micro spikes here and wore them the rest of the day.

We enjoyed nice views across the Taylor River to Treen Peak and rugged Mt. Garfield. What beautiful country!

We had chatted briefly with a nice young man earlier who was returning from the falls, so had some sort of idea where to turn off the trail. The snow was quite deep on the scramble up the hill to the falls, but we got close enough to enjoy some great views.

We had passed several groups of tennis shoe-clad college kids slipsliding around who had given up on finding the falls, so we were quite happy to be rewarded with such a beautiful view after five miles of trudging through snow!
