I managed to give myself purple and painful toenails on both of my big toes yesterday. I suspect there are many skiers or climbers on this site that have experienced this, so for any of those people: Is there anything I can do at home to treat this/save the nail, or should I just suck it up and wait until the nails fall off?

It's gonna do what it's gonna do now. Immediately after icing can help keep the swelling down and reduce pain if injury is significant. Have lost two fingernails and part of one toenail in the last year. It hasn't been any sort of issue for me other than protecting it from catching on something and ripping off. Boots too small or top of boots too loose; adjust.

If not now, when?

You are most likely going to loose the nail/nails. I heat a paperclip with a propane torch, till red hot, then melt through the top of the nail to relieve the pressure. The volcanic like blood eruption is mesmerizing. 🌋😀

Painful and slow to heal. I hope it's different for you.

Pretty gross, but this immediately took the pain when walking from 6/10 to 2/10. Unbelievable the difference it made. Thanks!

Tape the nail in place once it starts to get wiggly. The longer you can keep it on the better off you'll be. You'll know when the time comes to take it off - don't rush it.

yeah, do what shred said I've lost at least a dozen big toenails in 30+ years of kicking steps. It helps to trim them as short as possible.
