My mother grew up in that gulch. It called Winesap Canyon in those days; 1917-1941.
Interesting local history. The area was commonly referred to as Winesap Canyon up into 1970's when I left the area. It probably still is by the locals.
Interesting Jake, Steve went back the next day up Oklahoma Gulch over Goman Ridge and down into a canyon East of Muddy Creek to check out an old homestead finding only a few indications it ever existed after the wildfires. It is amazing how quiet and isolated those ridges can seem during the week modern housing is creeping in and weekends can leave you shaking your head. I love the clear views up valley when you can get them.
Yesterday we decided to leave the gloomy skies of the west slope and look for some sun on the east side. As we descended over Stevens Pass into the fog and drizzle covering the east slope as far as the eye could see, I had a feeling we screwed up. Especially when I received a text from Triciaann in Gold Bar exclaiming that it was sunny and warm..
Nevertheless, we had an enjoyable day exploring Oklahoma Ridge and later driving a ways up in the Gulch, where we saw some balsamroot blooming and many whitetail deer. Lots of buttercups and tiny white flowers blooming, although the balsamroot was still a ways off, except near the road. The grass and sage is greening up nicely and we plan on going back to enjoy the colors in a few weeks.
Thank you wildernessed for the map!
Too bad on the weather we were housebound though I got out on a run today. The hills are greening up nicely and the flowers are showing progress. Time to see what can be done up in the Methow.🤗
