mad.gif Just got back from a 6ish mile hike at the Elbe Hills horse trails near Ashford. Found 3 ticks on me when I got home. Small ones too. Look like deer ticks. I never seen ticks west of the Cascade crest except in the Olympics.

Crap - was hoping this spring would be tick-free. Thanks for the warning!

Tick season warnings are up in Central Oregon. I just sprayed a bunch of hiking clothing with Permethrin, especially socks, summer shortie gaitors, and pants legs.

A quote from that article: " Officials say that they will also work out a way to eliminate the insect from the state." LOL, yeah, good luck with that. Though maybe they can eradicate all ticks from the state. That would be a miraculously good thing.

My dogs were tick magnets in the Randle area. They even got them while running around outside my house.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

My girlfriend had a tick on her after gardening in our yard in gold bar last summer. She thinks it jumped out of our cedar. No recent hiking or east side visits. She felt it on her neck before it attached. Close up photo verified.

How Lyme disease became the first epidemic of climate change – Mary Beth Pfeiffer https://aeon.co/essays/how-lyme-disease-became-the-first-epidemic-of-climate-change Forget Ebola, Sars and Zika: ticks are the next global health threat Ticks could be best described as the used syringes of the natural world due to their promiscuous feeding habits. Most ticks go through three stages in their lives and feed on a different host at each stage, whilst simultaneously collecting hitchhiking microbes in their blood meals. Ticks also have one of the widest distributions of any vector on Earth – they can be found on every continent, including frigid Antarctica. This combination of ubiquity and a bad habit for accumulating pathogenic microbes make ticks some of the most dangerous vectors on the planet. https://www.theguardian.com/science/blog/2018/jan/25/forget-ebola-sars-and-zika-ticks-are-the-next-global-health-threat

My dog was bitten by a tick and got thrombocytopenia from it. She almost died. Thankfully I have pet insurance as she now has to be monitored for the rest of her life. I heard that Frontline is not that effective so now I am using Nexgard. The consequences of one tick bite has been in the multiple thousands. I won’t bore everyone with the details. Suffice to say that you really need to keep on top of the preventatives.

4 things to keep the ticks at bay 1) Permethrin your clothing (long pants, long sleeves), shoes, socks and hat. 2) Permethrin your clothing (long pants, long sleeves), shoes, socks and hat. 3) Permethrin your clothing (long pants, long sleeves), shoes, socks and hat. 4) Cover yourself with the noted clothing from steps 1-3, DEET any exposed skin.
