Bump for a very cool trip report. More of us should be taking on this kind of work.

Nice work!
I wonder if the 3-5 years reference is to the seat structure itself or to how long it takes for the hole to fill up -- which would very much depend on popularity.
Chain and Doelle are a nice area, but a bit past the typical "overnighter" distance from the trailhead and horrors the hike out involves non-trivial amounts of climbing.

Now that it's been 5 years I wonder if those toilets are full.
Also, it would be nice if the leaders could teach the kids to camp on bare dirt at established camp sites.

I'm not familiar with where they stayed, but that's not always an option.
I may not be the smartest, I may not be the strongest, but I don't want to be. I only want to be the best I can be.

UPDATE - Oct. 3-4, 2020
Just over 7+ years later one of the Scouts who earned his Eagle installing them revisited the site. The kybos are still in very good shape and the pits below are not full.
Brings back great memories, that was a heckuva project for a 15 year old boy.

That camp site is pretty established. But I don’t like setting up camp that close to the trail. And the fish are bigger in the Doelle’s.

Received a recent report from the Scouting community that 10 years later and the Chain Lakes kybo is holding up great. Doesn't seem like it's been 10 years since that lively group of kids pulled off the one of the most ambitious Eagle Scout projects I've ever seen. Still so proud of those guys!
