Steve and Hit the Trail accompanied me on this short loop with excellent wildflower coverage and mountain views (Mission to Mastiff). Xanadu is a cranky old ridge and a well used bike path gaining elevation out of Derby Canyon to several highpoints and Humility Hill. It becomes very open with many variations and allows you to survey the surrounding area. There was no snow above 4000', Humility Hill was dry as was Blag Mountain and wildflowers were plentiful at 3500' plus, we had lunch with a wide angle view of the mountains from Mission to Mastiff. The prescribed burns made for some haze but a great trip for the small effort. 6 mi, 2000' r/t. Related Trips

It's nice when these two characters do a "normal" hike! I always enjoy the camaraderie and banter of the outing. This time was no different. Fun day guys. up.gif

Did you pass by that interestingly shaped big rock on the ridge again?

Actually most of that trail is so open and brush free I don't think it would matter. Unless you were worried about a dog running in brush.

Always good stuff folks! It's a fun loop with Epic views. Friendly reminder to those not familiar w/Xanadu and looking to hike up the cranky old ridge. Xanadu is a downhill mountain bike trail, built and maintained by Evergreen bike association. It is a Destination trail, in many guidebooks, and among the most popular in the area. On a weekend, there will be a steady stream of fast riders all day. Most of them will not be expecting to see uphill traffic or hikers. If you hike out here pay attention, keep your wits about you and know what you're getting into before you go. Like all Destination Locations, it's crowded on weekends, and the crowds are much larger than 5 years ago. I did a slow loop last Saturday and saw 40 or 50 people in less than 3hours. All on bikes.

Yes, good advice. Even on our mid-week hike we saw 6-8 bikes going up as we were going down the logging road. They do an uphill grunt on the old road before they get to fly down Xanadu. One saving grace is that a lot of the distance in the tree covered area has an alternative route if you use original parts of the trail that existed before they built all the loop-d-doos and banked turns. Or you could hike up the logging road and continue west past the Xanadu turnoff and come down the next ridge over. There is a trail over there also (so says Wildernessed). In fact we would have looped out that way if I had not told my wife I would be home by early afternoon. Or just go up the ridge staying off the Xanadu speedway.
