We're getting several videos posted (in the YouTube thread) regarding the recent eruptions on the Big Island. Maybe this topic needs its own thread. I spent a week on the Puna Coast in 1989. I swam at the black sand beaches and observed the different kinds of lava rock. At one point I drove down the highway to the previous eruption where a huge wall of lava crossed the highway a few years in the past. There I hiked down to the coast over hardened lava fields to watch the lava push into the sea. Lots of dark smoky clouds and steam at that place. This is kind of like the ice caves experience--where you shouldn't tempt Mother Nature. Supposedly the hardened lava could collapse as you walk over it. So I doubt I would do it today. Maybe some others here have done this as well. There were other folks out there too.
This video is really interesting. Great explanation of how things are happening beneath the ground of the Leilani Estates. ~z

^ I've been posting the videos in the "What are you watching on YouTube" thread the last week - my buddy has been sending me the links to the best stuff.
He's leaving tomorrow morning for Lahaina - so I probably won't see any updates for a week.
That last one that has the graphic showing the way the Pali is moving down toward the coast - two feet in the last week - is pretty spooky.
Biggest landslide in world history ( actually pre-history ) was on the north side of Big Island. The whole side of the island collapsed and caused a big enough tsunami that they've found pieces of seashells on the south side of Maui 4000 feet above sea level.
If the whole south side of Big Island slides into the ocean, we are probably toast here on the west coast.

I'm glad I got to see the lava spurting in the lava lake a few months back no telling what might happen. It's interesting following what is going on there. Plane tickets to the Big Island I think dropped in price I almost want to go again... a lot more to see than just the volcano.

Things are heating up a bit on the Big Island. Kilauea erupted this morning around 6 am local time. Here's a video from KHON2. Nothing too exciting to see, just a newsperson by the side of the road. ~z

The following is a great web site for pictures and information about the eruptions.
https://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/cams/
It is updated most every day.

Here's a (Guardian) video I found via Missoula Channel 8 KPAX/CBS News. ~z

There is no such thing as hydrogen sulphate gas. What they are referring to is hydrogen sulphide gas which is very toxic near that of hydrogen cyanide. Hydrogen sulphate is another name for sulphuric acid which would not be generated in a reducing atmosphere.

Thanks for catching that Malachai. I didn't realize it when I posted that. I am going to delete that quote. No sense in putting out bad information. But the video is still worth watching. ~z

Once a chemist always a chemist, I saw the clip on the news this morning and the quote bugged me.

^ here's all the sound you need for that one:
