I am more impressed with the athleticism of the big cats, perhaps the world's best athletes. Can jump 30' in a standing leap - in my athletic youth I could do 8-1/2', and 15' standing high jump - in my basketball days I could do 32", I think there may be an NBA player or two that could do 44".
I've also read elsewhere that a cougar can reach full speed in three strides and that they can drop uninjured from a tree from 60'. I can't do that either......
I once encountered a cougar will driving down Canyon Creek Road near Glacier. Rather than leap into the woods it chose to run down the road for several hundred yards first. As we tailed it I looked down and saw we were going 40 mph. They're amazing!
Yea they are also very stealth and can sneak up on you without you even noticing. The have a knack of stalking their prey in rocky type areas where they can pounce upon them.
The thing about cougars is that you are lucky if you ever see one in the wild. But if you do any significant hiking I will guarantee you that they have seen you....more than you can imagine.
