My son is stationed at Ramstein, Germany for a couple of years and he invited me to go to Switzerland for a week with him. This is the first time in the Alps for me, and I’m completely entranced by the beauty of the mountains and the Swiss culture! My great grandfather was a Swiss watchmaker, and I’ve always wanted to visit my cultural roots.
We had fantastic weather today, our first day in Grindelwald, despite the forecast thunderstorms. We spent several hours hiking up above the town through wildflowers and pastures full of contented cows.

More to explore tomorrow, if the weather stays nice.

Ooooh lucky you!! That area is so pretty. Wilderness has something, but the way the Alps are cultivated with farmland, alms and huttes is also really pretty. I hope you have a great time.
I remember from our vacations in the alps that thunderstorm risk was pretty common. We just tried to make it out of the mountains early enough on those days.

This is our third day of hiking and we have been successfully dodging the thunderstorms so far by getting started early and finishing by 4pm. Right now the stars are out, so we are hoping for good weather for a longer hike we are trying tomorrow.
My son has also been making the best of it by skiing at various Swiss resorts all winter long.

Don't you miss slide alder, vine maple and a little devil's club thrown in for good measure?

Hiking with cows! Grindelwald is great. I remember thinking it looked like Swiss gardeners had manicured the entire mountain.

If time allows, try to get up to Gimmelwald with views across Lauterbrunnen valley of the Mönch, Eiger and Jungfrau.

Just got back from the most spectacular and the most strenuous dayhike of my entire life! We hiked Section 11 of the Via Alpina, about 12-13 miles, from Grindelwald, el. 3,393 ft.,up to the pass at Klein Scheidegg at 6,762 ft., and all the way down the other side to Lauterbrunnen el. 2,612 ft. Then we took two trains back to our hostel at Grindelwald. Along the way we saw the most mind-boggling views imagineable, including the ones Barb E mentioned, Eiger, Monch and part of Jungfrau. We were very lucky again with the weather, as thunderstorms were forecast, but never affected us.
After we look through the hundred or so photos we took, I’ll post another TR.
