Today Dee Molenaar turned 100 years old.
Dee was part of the 1953 American K2 expedition which was turned back attempting an epic rescue of one of their party in a storm, and immortalized by Pete Schoening's life-saving belay which saved the lives of six of the team, including Molenaar.
Molenaar is best known for writing The Challenge of Rainier, THE definitive book on the mountain, and for his watercolors and maps which have graced and enriched dozens of mountaineering books, including Fred Beckey's Cascade Alpine Guide.
He even painted a dozen watercolors from camp at 25,000 feet on K2!
Happy birthday, Dee, and many thanks for your fine art over the years.
