KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. - Deputies say a 37-year-old man has drowned at the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area. Michael Mitchell, of Post Falls, ID, was hiking into Tuck Lake with his brother and a friend during the day of July 8, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office. Authorities said Mitchell was attempting to swim to a small island in the lake when he began to struggle and went under the water. His brother and friend tried to rescue him and crews with the Sheriff's Office and a helicopter from the Chelan County Sheriff's Office responded. Mitchell was found roughly 60 feet from the shoreline in 15 feet of water, according to reports. The Sheriff's office is reminding people of the dangers of swimming in cold water, which they say can lead to shock and breathing difficulties.

I've swum to that island. 37 yo, seems too young for a heart attack, but it can happen. As well as many other unfortunate things. Condolences to family and friends.

But was it in early July or late August/September?

Cold water shock can and does frequently and indiscriminately kill people in pretty much the blink of an eye, which is why even proficient swimmers can drown a dozen yards from shore/safety. http://www.coldwatersafety.org/ColdShock.html
