You mentioned that, one of many success stories I have heard. Pass my thanks on to C for her much appreciated input.
Surgeon said the surgery went "very well." I got #7 joint hardware, next to largest, rarely used. Surgery took longer than expected: Took a long time to remove a big bone spur due to proximity of artery and never. Doc said I have "big tough bones" that look a long time to saw.

You didn't DIY?! 
Six months out from mine, and life is good. Back paddling since late March, and I could have probably jumped back in a bit sooner. No problem shouldering my boat and huffing it to / from the river. Still a bit comical when trying to exit my kayak in unstable situations, but it's getting better. Due to trying to capitalize on the remaining spring runoff, I've only been hiking a couple of times, both moderate distance with limited elevation gain / loss. But no problems moving along at a decent gate for 6-8 miles. Used trekking poles on the rocky, more technical stretches.
I'm sure your recovery will go well.

Hey Steve! Lots of great firsthand advice here. I'll just chime in to say my wife has done hundreds of these surgeries and she says its one of the most rewarding procedures because it makes such an huge improvement in peoples' lives they are near universally ecstatic post-op.

Tough first 2 days after surgery. Lots of pain and swelling. Gradual improvement since with some bumps. Motor nerves are gradually waking up, and as they do the pain moves around. Days are much better, nights not so much.
