route 1 28 miles, 13k gain. off trail consists of 8 mi and 6600ft --- most challenging, by far, off trail travel (occasional cliffs, steep gully with talus, but a known route). shortest time with overnight gear. route 2 42 miles, 11.5k gain. off trail consists of 6 mi and 3300ft --- pretty straightforward off trail travel (rising traverse via heather, talus, snow) route 3 37 miles, 11.5k gain. off trail consists of 4.5 mile and 4700ft --- middle of the road off trail travel -- steep more than anything, unlikely to have issues. best camp option, though longest time with overnight gear

Insufficient info, e.g., party members experience, but I'll play: 20 years ago, route 1 3 years ago, route 2 or 3 Next year: knee willing

Which one has the best scenery? Which one is the least popular? These are factors I would give more weight to than than mileage, elevation gain and technical difficulty.

route 1: best alpine scenery, some people, but none on the off trail route 2: long forest until reaching alpine (14 miles), some people, possibly some on the off trail route 2: long forest until reaching alpine (14 miles), some people, but none on the off trail compared to most things on i-90 or hwy 2, whichever route we pick will be quite lonely i think.

Draw straws. Save the other two straws for two future trips.

Lonely is actually pretty easy to achieve. Just go to where the peoples are, and then keep going. I'd go with the highest camps, regardless of other factors. Suffer, suffer, suffer: CAMP HIGH!

Route 2 or 3. They sound a lot easier. It is only 14 more miles by trail, but much easier off trail. On trail is usually measured in miles per hour (2 to 3, typically). Off trail is usually measured in hours per mile, or scratches, bruises and number of curse words used. Of course that isn't true if you happen across a great off trail section (which functions much like a nice trail would) but that doesn't appear to be the case with option 1. It is quite possible that route 2 or 3 are faster, which means that you have more time to enjoy the scenery. You hike an extra 14 miles of trail, but probably more than make up with that on the off trail section. Choosing between option 2 or 3 comes down to how much easier route 2 is. Is it worth the extra mile and a half? My guess is it is, which is why I would lean towards 2. Of course all of this changes if folks in the group have foot problems, and the idea of long trail miles sounds ominous. In that case the situation likely reverses itself (although off trail travel can be pretty tough on the feet as well).

I'd watch the weather and if it stays hot I would pick the one with the least sun exposure and in the coolest area.

I prefer to get my overnight gear off as soon as possible and be in the high country as much as possible. Gotta go with option 1.
