I haven't been out much yet - how are the bugs this year? I'm sure it varies, but what has your experience been?

Just browsing reports on WTA, some people say they've never seen them worse, others say not so bad. I've been pretty lucky so far and haven't seen to many on my hikes and I'm out every week.

In the nice weather we had up to a few days ago I hardly encountered a bug. Now the stinky hot weather will bring out a bumper crop.

On a cool breezy afternoon early last week, didn't see any. This past Saturday, they were swarming about as badly as I've ever seen them in WA, but nothing compared to the mother's day->father's day period in NH when the black flies sometimes threaten to pick you up and carry you away.

We were just up the Chiwawa and the bugs seemed to be normal-heavy. Not much during the day, but as soon as the sun started to drop the flies, then mosquitos worked the area in shifts.

Usually I get to brag about the lack of biting flying bugs in Central Oregon. And in the "lowlands" that seems to be true this year, but I was mtn biking above 6000 feet and clouds of bloodthirsty mosquitoes above that elevation were more than impressive.
A few were even biting through permethrin soaked clothing.
Normally 20% Picaridin stops them on bare skin, but it wasn't even phasing these clouds of Mossy's. Even with soaking my legs with the spray, the backs of my bare calves were looking like hamburger by the end of the day.
I think our mild winter here resulted in a higher than usual bug situation in the high alpine regions.

Adirondack black flies scare me. If one should happen to hit one's head and be knocked unconscious they would eat you alive, leave nothing but bones...in a matter of 15 minutes. Any type of bug juice is just attractant to those beasts.
Lower 48 musky toes are no problemo.
Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

Worst mosquitoes I've experienced in WA on the Pete Lake trail Saturday. Still swarming when fast-hiking. When stopped, within 10 seconds they're flying into my eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Wore my long sleeve on the hike out in the heat. I still count 30+ bites on my upper body and that's not counting all the bites on my scalp...maybe they just love me....

Pretty annoying at Catheral Lakes over the 4th of July weekend. Not bad along the N Fork Sauk, PCT through Red and White passes, and Pilot Ridge.

6/13-15. Very few mosquitoes and a few black flies in lower Box Canyon creek.
Noticeably worse at Rachel lake when the wind died down. Still only moderately bad.

No bugs at the start or on the summit of Trapper's Peak off Hwy 20 on Sat 7/14, but swarms of mosquitoes through the old growth section of the hike. No stopping allowed.

Really bad last weekend at Headlight Basin. PTSD bad. The flowers were pretty though.
