thanks bobbi! == Friday July 27, 2018 14:03 PDT Additional Opportunity to Comment - Olympic National Forest Dungeness Roads Env. Assessment The Preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Dungeness Watershed Roads Management Project is available for an additional 30-day comment period to provide more time for public comments. The project area is located on the Hood Canal Ranger District of the Olympic National Forest, just south of Sequim, WA in Clallam County. The Preliminary EA includes an analysis of two action alternatives proposing road decommissioning and closure treatments to improve conditions in the Dungeness River Watershed. Alternatives considered include treatments to: reduce the potential for the roads to generate sediment due to culvert blowouts, debris torrents, and surface erosion; restore hillslope hydrology; and improve stability of roads. Adjustments to recreation sites and habitat for the endangered Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly directly associated with project roads are also proposed. A legal notice for this comment period is expected to publish on August 2, 2018 in the Peninsula Daily News. The Forest Service will accept comments on this proposal for 30 days following the publication of the opportunity to comment legal notice which is the exclusive means of calculating the comment period. The attached letter includes more information about how to comment. The Preliminary EA is available at the project website: http://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=49643 Submit comments directly at the project website. Under the "Get Connected" heading to the right, click on the "Comment/Object on Project" link and follow on-screen instructions. -USDA-

Dungeness Watershed Roads Management Project decision released today. It affects recreational trail access: Lower Dungeness / Gold Creek Trailhead access: No. "Convert 1.4 miles of existing ML3 road to trail. (NFS road 2870-230)" "The 2870-230 road to the Lower Dungeness/Gold Creek Trailhead will be converted to trail and the parking lot moved to the 2870 road where there is space to accommodate vehicles." Silver Lake way trail & Dungeness SNOTEL #943 access: No. "Decommission 1.4 miles of ML3 (passenger vehicles) roads. (NFS road 2870)." "I have decided to consolidate parking at Tubal Cain Trailhead and decommission the portion of the 2870 road past the trailhead. While my decision to decommission this section of road would add additional length of non-motorized travel to the current access point for the Silver Lakes way trail (a non-system, trail)... Access by ATV to maintain the permitted SNOTEL site would be granted to the permit holder", the US Natural Resources Conservation Service, Snow Survey Office, for annual maintenance. Maynard Burn / Tyler Peak Trailhead access: Yes, for now... "Retain year-round access on the 2870-270 road at its current Maintenance Level 2 status. Place boulders on the 2870-270 road on the south side, near the end (milepost 1.6) to focus parking and better define the trailhead to protect Taylor’s Checkerspot butterfly habitat (see EA, Appendix B for diagram)." "My decision will maintain year-round access to the Maynard Burn Trailhead and Tyler Peak climbing area, although new concerns about the road’s condition may warrant future evaluation." Quotes are from the Draft Decision Notice.

We campaigned a bit to keep the 270 spur open year-round for access to the climbing area, glad the decision went this way.
