Mars will come within 35,784,481 miles (57,589,547 kilometers) of Earth four days after opposition, at 3:50 a.m. EDT (0750 GMT) on Tuesday (July 31). It will then take a light beam just 3 minutes and 12 seconds to cross the interplanetary gulf between Earth and Mars. The light from the sun takes 8 minutes and 12 seconds to reach Earth travelling at 186,287 miles per second.

Trip Report: Seattle, WA I saw Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and the nearly full Moon. Seeing wasn't the best but I could make out some details on Jupiter. Mars was a red disc and I was talking myself into thinking I saw an ice cap. Saturn's rings were probably the highlight. I was a bit limited by my neighborhood, I may try for an unobstructed southerly view tomorrow.
