K2 has crashed their DeHaviland Beaver on Thunder Peak with a full load of Polish tourists. Many to all are presumed deceased. https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/aviation/2018/08/06/search-resumes-for-flightseeing-plane-that-crashed-near-denali-no-word-on-pilot-or-passengers/

Bummer. Ive done that flight with them in one of their otters. Its an awesome flight into some amazing territory, but the terrain is... seriously unforgiving. Now that I think about it, I am not sure I have ever been afraid on an airplane before or since, and that includes some poor decision making inside florida thunderstorms. But being that close(and even miles away sure seemed close) to some of those mighty alpine walls... it raised the hair on the back of my neck, that's for sure.

Damn...sad day. RIP all frown.gif

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

Wow. Sorry to hear. Bad news. Tourists help those businesses and the costs of climbers who fly into Kahiltna. Maybe I am wrong, isn't this Mt. Hunter? The article says Thunder Mtn.

Art is an adventure.

The article is really confusing. How did the pilot survive? Did he jettison?

So how do you explain these lines?
Quote:
The plane's pilot survived the crash, and made contact twice before communications ended. ... Layson was able to make two calls by satellite phone in the hour after the crash and reported injuries before communication with the plane ended.

On Supertopo, where those those in the know are, the consensus is that it was in fact on Thunder Mountain. http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=3112649&msg=3112846#msg3112846

He survived for at least an hour, but all are believed to have died on impact or soon after. All subsequent articles have referred to all as having died.

Someone can survive a crash, or any accident, and succumb later to their injuries or to weather.

They can, but nowhere in the article does it say explicitly that he did. And other parts of the article say that when the ranger inspected the scene, it appeared everyone died on impact and didn't move after the crash. I guess he was so injured that he was unable to move anywhere, and then died? The article is terribly written. It skims over the most interesting part of the story and makes you piece it together. I expect better from a Wasilla reporter named "Zaz." winksmile.gif

That is the impression i got. Doesnt sound like he lasted long. Hard to set down lightly in terrain like that.

Mark Westman has posted some new photos on SuperTopo, and it looks like recovery will be very very difficult. http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/3112649/Multiple-Fatality-Plane-Crash-in-Denali-National-Park
