Strange place to go missing. Fairly flat, straight-foward hike. Maybe he tried to get a closer look at that waterfall near the end of the old Sheep Canyon Road and he fell.

From a KATU article:
Quote:
After visiting him in the hospital, Matheny's parents, Linda and Carney Matheny, said their son survived by eating huckleberries and bees he had killed.
That's definitely a new one.

From the CNN article: Matheny would eventually be found 2.7 miles away from the car "as the crow flies," Linda said. Linda arrived in Washington with her husband on Sunday. She said the most encouraging hour of each day was from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. as volunteer teams arrived to continue the search for her son. "The look in their faces, they were going to find our boy," she said.

I bet the "bees" were horse flies.

Also from the article: "Linda Matheny said her son was scratched up when he was found. His feet are banged up because he was wearing flip flops when he went missing and they broke, she said." When you enter the backcountry, flip flops are not a wise choice. I don't want to be too critical, but this casual approach to taking off down a trail is going to get many more people in trouble. I know people chafe against the Ten Essentials and such, but I think it is time to scare people into being safe. OK, maybe not really scare, but educate strongly. Rumi

The flip flop footwear is remarkable, all right. So is getting yourself lost on such a basic, well traveled trail.
