Site selection is important of course. But digging into hardpan is misguided to my thinking. I look for soils that already have a high proportion of organic material as this speeds decomposition.
The trowel is pretty much deadweight but not much of it. I like my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trowel. If there are trees around, get under a tree and you can often dig a hole in the duff easy, with no tools at all. Maybe a rock or a hiking pole.
