Bummer about missing your opportunity after scoring permits. Not the first time people have been smoked out of the 'Chants. There was an official closure 1 or 2 summers ago due to a nearby fire.
The Idaho Sawtooths is a nice consolation prize though, that area is fantastic!

Agreed! The Beartooth Absaroka, The Sawtooths, The Seven Devils, and The Eagle Cap are all a better choice than The Enchantments and none of those have a lottery to obtain a permit.
We have been in the high sierra for the last two weeks. Little or no smoke, visited 5 high lake basins all the equivalent of the chants nobsmoke easy permits. Some smoke from 1000 islands to Reds but noting outrageous. Live music in out tent at Mammoth.
