I was thinking about taking a (long) day trip and doing some short hikes around the Leavenworth and Wenatchee area. How are the colors off highway 2 and I90 and also around the towns themselves? Is it too late for fall colors or are they still vibrant? This is my first year here so I don't know how it compares to the Seattle area. I will be doing some photography so any suggestions where to stop or go along the way or in town are welcome. Thank you!

The colors were flamboyant along US-2 on Sunday. Try the turnouts along the Tumwater Canyon near Leavenworth. Colors were gorgeous around Coles Corner but I'm not sure of specific photography spots or short hikes.
I keep meaning to do a fall color photography trip along the US-2, so I'd also appreciate suggestions of where to stop.

They might be flamboyant, but they are well past peak and fading rapidly. Maples are mostly leaf free, i.e., no more vivid reds. Like they used to say in Brooklyn, wait till next year.

Make a loop. Take I90 out, go up 97, make a detour up 9712 (9716?), a right turn at the pass. Then drive home over Stevens. You'll have plenty of opportunity to get out and stretch your legs.
The detour is on a dirt road, and a rough one at times, but it's very worth it. You'll only have to go a few miles, and you can make it in a low clearance vehicle as long as you don't treat it as a race.
