I did this hike yesterday for the first time. In case you were unaware, WTA did a nice job cleaning this trail up this summer. Anyway, I had heard there was still leftover logging equipment, like this, just off the trail:
I found some references that the "junk" is located past the official balcony, whereas some say it's on an overgrown road located just a few switchbacks from the very top. I tried walking through this gnarly section for maybe 0.1 mile, but gave up. Anyone know for sure where it is? Maybe even a waypoint for it? I found the 11 year old NWHiker post on this, but most of the images are now gone.

See info in this TR. It even has a link to a Caltopo map for the location of the truck. https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8025904&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

FredV -- many thanks! So is the truck near where the green dot is on your CalTopo map, or does that merely mark the start of the side trail to the truck? As an aside, that was an amazing loop you did!

No not the dot, the truck is at the end of the green line (side trail), which is a very old logging road.

FredV -- Thanks for the clarification! I walked -- or I should say "hacked my way" -- through the old road for a ways, but apparently gave up too soon.

The “museum” took off from the place where the old road crossed the creek for the second time and went up the uphill bank to another old road.. First time was low on a bridge.

When work on the USFS section of the Dirty Harry trail was open for comments in 2016 I asked about the status of the truck because it was mentioned in the SOPA. The plan is to leave the truck there. Q: What is the plan for the truck known as "Dirty Harry's Museum"? The SOPA only mentions "treatment of an old abandoned boom truck". A: Regarding the truck - the interdisciplinary team of resource specialists for the project looked at it in summer 2015. They determined that no action was needed in terms of removing or mitigating it. It is an interesting sight for recreationists to enjoy and does not appear to be impacting any natural resources.

the truck is actually on a loop of road that connects with the Dirty Harry's Peak trail at two points. The upper junction of the museum road is much more obvious than the lower one, which is hidden in a brushy mess by the creek. To find the upper junction, continue up the DHP trail past the creek and around a switchback. The upper junction is located next to some big logs with a view of McClellan Butte.

"hidden in a brushy mess by the creek" is a good description for the point where it starts. I found it by noting the trail starts just a short distance past the creek, and then just looked all around for anything resembling a trail. The trail itself is rough enough it made me entertain doubts whether this was actually a trail for most of the way! It's a relief to hear the upper junction is much more obvious!
