Troublesome Mountain 5433
I had a great trip up Troublesome Mtn on Saturday. The weather was beautiful and sunny; although, it was a bit hotter than I expected and no real breeze.
I opted to do a complete off trail route for this peak. I had done Toil and Double Toil and doing a ridge traverse from the Blanca trail would have been too much work. I drove to the grated creek crossing past Garland then hiked 100ft east and headed up. I wasn’t sure what the forest would be like, but it was fairly decent with not much brush. I paralleled the right side of the creek taking the easiest line. I knew there were rocky outcroppings from previous observations of the route, and I explored those as I hiked up. The best were around 2800ft. I continued up following game trails and the easiest line before heading for the boulder field. I saw some pink flags enroute so others have headed up this way. (I read several reports when I got back that show a similar route.) The boulder field I was aiming for starts at the section 24 number (3400ft) on the map. The boulder field is a nice stair stepper, smaller boulders. The field leads you all the way to the alpine and provides nice views to the south. I hiked up to 4900ft then traversed and made my way down and up to the summit. I startled a mtn goat near the nice flats at 4900ft, they seem to enjoy this remote area too.
At the summit, I enjoyed the sun and beautiful views for 2hrs then headed down.
Beautiful hike.
Notes: No water sources on route right now. Start is 0.7miles from Blanca Forest road.
Thanks for the TR! Now and then you just get lucky on some of the forest ascents and this one looks great. Love the stair climber boulder stepper routes, just keep chugging and you gain like crazy.
This bit of Indian Summer is sure making for some great trips
