Indeed, so how does one go about doing this without causing themselves some "official" trouble? Other than money, time and initiative, what is needed?

It's USFS property, so work requires USFS approval. It's within Seven Devils Wilderness, so repairs will require USFS fill out a wilderness Minimum Requirements worksheet and the work be done using hand tools and the materials and tools packed in by mules if possible.
NEPA approval might fall within the existing Forest Plan or an existing programmatic structure repair plan. If not, it would have to be listed as a separate project for public comment in the forest's quarterly SOPA (schedule of proposed actions). If no motorized equipment or helicopter is used, then it ought to be possible for the project to be categorically excluded from further environmental analysis (not require a full EA). This process takes at least 6 months and the staff time to complete it costs a few thousand $.
In short, it requires some money, time and initiative from the USFS, as well as from volunteers. USFS needs to be a willing partner to save it.

I see, I was afraid it would be something like that. Well, if it happens (ever), I'd be interested in hearing/reading about it to see if I could arrange to be out there at the time of a project to assist in the re-roofing, or whatever.
