The Longview Daily News reports: "Officials have called off the search for a 18-year-old Kelso man missing since Monday when he vanished in the Lava Canyon area south of Mount St. Helens. Searchers found evidence that Garrett Canada may have entered the water. The Lava Canyon Trail parallels and crosses the Muddy River on the southeast side of the volcano in Skamania County. The river in that area flows swiftly through a narrow, rocky gorge and cascades over a significant waterfall. Avery Jackson, 19, called the Skamania County Sheriff's Office Monday evening to report that she had been hiking with Canada that day, but the two became separated after she stopped to take pictures. She was waiting for him by Canada's car and eventually got a ride to Cougar. "

That's a tragedy. I know I did a lot of really stupid crap at that age and I know I'm not the only one. Lucky only gets you so far, thank heavens I was lucky enough to live long enough to learn that lesson.

Same here, on all points made. That's a tough one, very sad indeed. I started to learn my lesson(s) maybe 50 years ago while scrambling on the coast near Coos Bay one afternoon with a buddy and I came very close to falling to the rocks/ocean after a slip on the grass slope above. Several more examples over the years, but (I think) I've now learned to be more thoughtful, in all activities. Now I just have to get the grandkids through that stage....if I live long enough.

If my math is correct, the death toll on that trail since 2003 is 8 people. The USFS web page for this trail cautions visitors about the hazards and includes a video which shows prominent signage warning hikers to stay on the trail. Sad story.

I know I was blissfully ignorant at that age. Because of that I always worried about my two sons. I wanted them to stretch themselves and be adventuresome, but I didn't want them to get in over their heads. RIP, Garrett.

Hope they find out otherwise later. If not, RIP hiker Garrett
