They passed an initiative to do away with the dreaded twice a year time change. This is ONE time I hope the adage--As California goes... applies to us.
Something must be done!
What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human末animals and aliens are great possibilities

Unfortunately remaining on Daylight Time all year (as opposed to Standard Time all year which is legal) requires an act of Congress. It's illegal under Federal law.
If a few more states would do this, maybe Congress would listen. Maybe.

Ah, the biannual discussion... Are you in favor of staying on standard time or daylight saving time? If I get to choose, I'm voting for DST. The idea that there's equal daylight before and after 12:00 noon doesn't balance well with my actual day's activities. I'd much rather shift that a bit later. I'm almost always up until 9pm, and often a bit later. And while on work days I usually crawl out of bed shortly after 5am, I'm certainly not up at 3am.

Agreed. I've wondered why any of the supposedly affected entities (schools, etc) don't just change their operating hours accordingly instead of the "rest of us" having to do so twice annually. Doesn't affect me much anyway as I'm now retired, but most of the population has to deal with it. Arizona also does not switch (never has, therefore didn't have to "change" as I understand it).

Yup. I lived there a couple years during exile. That was one of the few good things about AZ. I'm thinking Indiana? does not change either.
I would not have brought up the biannual complaint about this except for the fact that Califonia is Doing Something.
We have legalized pot which is not legalized federally. Why not the time?
As for the poor children walking to school in the dark, very few walk anymore.

Just so we're all on the same page, AZ stays on standard time all year. Hence, when other states switch to DST, in AZ it's lighter earlier in the AM, but gets darker earlier as well.

As for the school children, it appears to be walking to/from and waiting at the bus stop, where passing cars don't see them in the dim light, that is a problem. On the other hand, all three of my Shoreline grandchildren have had to walk to their junior high which is exactly one mile away. (Since the walk to school is up a long steep hill, they've never been in better shape than they were in junior high!) With the short days this time of year, it doesn't matter a lot--the morning walk even on standard time will be in the dark for at least 2 months.
Oregon could, I believe, without Federal permission, opt to be in the Mountain Time zone and stay on Mountain standard time, which would be the equivalent of year--around daylight time (except for the small portion near the Idaho border which is on Mountain Time anyway). I understand that some of the New England states are looking to join the Atlantic time zone (far eastern Canada).
I don't know if that ploy would work for WA and CA. The adjacent western portions of Idaho and Nevada are both on Pacific time, while the reverse is true for Oregon. And, of course, the many residents of southwestern WA who work in Portland would not be happy if WA and OR were in different time zones.
So much politics is bound up in time zone boundaries (as I heard years back from long-time residents of Nebraska about the mid-state break between Central and Mountain time) that it's probably hopeless. Perhaps if more states would vote in year around daylight time, Congress might act. More likely, though, just talk. Time zones do affect interstate transportation! They can also affect employees of east coast firms living out here, who don't appreciate phone calls from the boss at 5 am Pacific time!
It sure would be wonderful not to have to change clocks or physically adapt to twice-yearly time changes!

Surprising to see agreement on the topic this time around?! I would be fine doing away with the hour swap - as long as we got to Keep Year-Round DST! As Grannyhiker noted this would require a change of federal law, but if CA, OR & WA all agreed they wanted DST maybe that would be enough motivation.

I don't care whether standard or savings. I just want some consistency.

The European Union is also proposing to eliminate seasonal clock changes. That means you are not only in sync with Californians, but with those socialistic Europeans. Are you sure you are feeling OK?

Maybe we should consider splitting the time zone in half for Washington State - and have half-hour time zones like they do in Tehran and Kabul.

While those at a more southerly latitude probably don't care, up here in WA I do care. I'd certainly consider and likely welcome permanent DST. But if the only option is permanent standard time, I'd much rather do the trivial (to me) 1 hour switch twice a year so I get more daylight in the afternoon / evening seven months a year.

Your suggestion affects parents and not just schools. Basically 2/3 of the workforce.

Animals do not understand time changes. Just ask a milk cow. Dogs don't get it either.
